Why 10 notable golfers are absent from the 2026 Presidents Cup

Captain's choices, recent golf form and eligibility rules all help explain why several familiar names will not compete at Medinah.

The United States and International teams are set for the 2026 Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club, but the final line-ups leave several familiar players outside the contest.

The biennial match will be staged on Medinah's Course No. 3 during the week of 22 to 27 September. Brandt Snedeker leads the United States, while Geoff Ogilvy captains the International team. Each 12-player side combines six automatic qualifiers with six captain's selections.

That selection system matters when considering the absentees. Some players were eligible but did not earn an automatic place or receive a captain's pick. Others compete on LIV Golf and were not in the selection pool. The ten names therefore do not share a single explanation for missing the match.

## Eligible players who were not selected

JJ Spaun is the most striking omission from the American side. The 2025 US Open champion had recent team experience from the Ryder Cup, yet Snedeker used his six picks elsewhere. Golf Monthly reported that Spaun had believed he was in contention after speaking with the captain, which makes his absence especially notable.

Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka were also available to the United States. Spieth's Presidents Cup history and Koepka's major championship record give both men substantial profiles, but neither had done enough in 2026 to secure a place in a crowded American team. Their reputations did not outweigh the selectors' assessment of current form and team balance.

Patrick Reed had returned to PGA Tour competition in 2026 and produced strong results in Dubai, Qatar and Ireland. An injury then forced him to withdraw from the BMW PGA Championship shortly before the teams assembled. He was not chosen as one of Snedeker's six picks.

Jason Day presents a similar selection question for the International team. The Australian has extensive Presidents Cup experience, but his recent PGA Tour run included three missed cuts in five starts. Ogilvy instead completed his side with other options.

## Players who were outside the selection pool

Five other prominent golfers were absent because their LIV Golf membership made them ineligible for selection under the competition's rules.

Bryson DeChambeau was the highest-profile American in that group. He entered the week second in LIV Golf's season standings, behind Jon Rahm, but could not qualify automatically or receive a captain's pick. His absence was therefore about eligibility, not a direct selection decision by Snedeker.

The same distinction applies to four International players: Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Smith, Lucas Herbert and Marc Leishman. Niemann finished third in the LIV Golf standings, while Herbert had won twice on the circuit and tied for sixth at The Open. Smith and Leishman also brought previous Presidents Cup experience, but none was eligible for Ogilvy's team.

The final rosters show why a list of absentees needs context. Spaun, Spieth, Koepka, Reed and Day were passed over after the qualifying and captain's-pick process. DeChambeau, Niemann, Smith, Herbert and Leishman were unavailable under the eligibility rules. All ten will miss Medinah, but the routes that took them out of the field were materially different.
